Fire Barriers & Ceilings

Fire barriers and fire-rated ceiling systems are fundamental to the concept of fire compartmentation. Fire barriers are continuous constructions (walls or floors) that extend from one structural element to another (e.g., from floor slab to floor slab, or wall to wall) to prevent the spread of fire and smoke. Fire-rated ceilings, often suspended below structural elements, provide a protective membrane that contributes to the fire resistance of the floor or roof assembly above.

By creating distinct fire compartments, these systems limit the size of a fire, restrict its movement throughout a building, protect evacuation routes, and safeguard critical areas or equipment. Their design and installation must meet specific fire resistance ratings (e.g., 60 minutes, 120 minutes) determined by building codes and the building's occupancy.
